Energy Symposium 2013
Energy Symposium 2013
Challenges in Energy Supply
03 June 2013
Groningen Seaports, Nijlicht, Eemshaven
The Wadden Sea Forum (WSF), an independent platform of stakeholder organisations in the Wadden Sea Region (WSR) of Denmark, Germany and The Netherlands, was established in 2002, following a decision by the 9th Governmental Conference of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation (TWSC). The central goal of the WSF is to contribute to an advanced and sustainable development in the Wadden Sea Region. In particular, this means integrating specific cross-sectoral and transboundary strategies, actions and techniques which are environmentally sound, economically viable and socially acceptable.
Recently, the issue of climate change, CO2 reduction and energy transition came into the focus, first in politics but then also in the regions. The WSF was encouraged by the political Wadden Sea Board to implement an energy expert workshop and to elaborate advice regarding sustainable energy production, distribution and CO2 neutrality. This was based on § 24 Sylt declaration: "Support the global and national efforts to mitigate causes of climate change at the regional level, by calling especially upon local and regional competent authorities and stakeholders, to work towards developing the Wadden Sea Region into a CO2-neutral area by 2030 or before, putting the focus on the special threats for coastal zones by global warming and sea level rise."
Objectives
With regard to sustainable energy supply and distribution in the Wadden Sea Region, the workshop objectives will be laid on:
• The importance of energy transition for the WSR in terms of ecology and economy;
• A holistic energy concept with production, supply and storage and distribution and consumption;
• The definition of strengths and obstacles of the promoted energy transition and concept;
• Measures of working towards a climate friendly Wadden Sea Region;
• The delivery of advice and recommendations for the political level, particularly for the Wadden Sea Conference in 2014.
Please register at the WSF secretariat by 22 May 2013, more information at the website of the Wadden Sea Forum.

KNAW-minisymposium Schaliegaswinning in Nederland
KNAW-minisymposium Schaliegaswinning in Nederland
Datum 12 juni 2013, 18.00 – 20.00 uur
Locatie Trippenhuis, Kloveniersburgwal 29, 1011 JV Amsterdam
Programma
18.00 uur Inleiding schaliegaswinning, prof. Rien Herber, hoogleraar geo-energie Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Emotional Geographies
Fourth International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Emotional Geographies
1-3 July 2013 at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands
The Fourth International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Emotional Geographies will be held 1-3 July 2013 at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, hosted by the Faculty of Spatial Sciences. After the success of the first three conferences (in Lancaster, UK, 2002; Kingston, Canada, 2006; and Adelaide, Australia, 2010), this fourth conference provides a forum for a range of people from different disciplinary backgrounds as well as societal partners and artists to creatively explore the role of emotion in thinking about and experiencing space and society.
We are facing spatial and social transformations as a result of climate change, financial crises, geopolitical instabilities and digital revolutions, which evoke emotional responses. These events led Vermeulen and Van den Akker (2010) to introduce the concept of metamoderism; a “spacetime that is … neither ordered nor disordered” (p.12) and that is characterized by the oscillation “between a modern enthusiasm and a postmodern irony, between hope and melancholy, between naïveté and knowingness, empathy and apathy, unity and plurality, totality and fragmentation, purity and ambiguity” (p.5-6).
We seek papers that investigate the multiplicity of spaces and places that produce and are produced by emotional and affective life, representing an inclusive range of theoretical and methodological engagements with emotion as a social, cultural and spatial phenomenon. Themes include but are not limited to: migration, landscapes, development, governance, arts, ageing, embodiment, cities, population decline, ruralities, wellbeing, real estate, non-human actors, memory, entrepreneurship, methods.
Key note speakers:
Rosi Braidotti (University of Utrecht)
Nigel Thrift (University of Warwick)
Divya Tolia-Kelly (Durham University)
Timotheus Vermeulen (Radboud University Nijmegen)
Robin van den Akker (Erasmus University)
Gert de Roo (University of Groningen)
Open sessions
We welcome abstracts even if they cannot be fitted into existing sessions. We will organise open sessions in order to provide space for additional presentations. If you feel you have a contribution to make to the conference but have not yet found a suitable session, please submit your abstract (300 words) to the conference organisation committee at emogeo@rug.nl before February 20th 2013.

Deltas in Times of Climate Change II
Where rivers flow into the sea, where lowlands encounter bays and oceans, people have settled since times immemorial. The land is fertile and easy to work; it is easy to transport people and goods over long distances. Living in deltas brings many advantages. But the coin has another side: dangers from flooding and from salt intrusion in times of drought. Climate change worsens the dangers and intensive use makes deltas more vulnerable to those threats.
Deltas have problems in common. They can learn from each other. They can cooperate in research and find common innovative solutions. Some deltas and delta cities already work closely together. Such cooperation can rapidly advance problem-solving. Connecting Delta Cities and the Delta Alliance, are both good examples of such fruitful cooperation.
To foster cooperation and the sharing of knowledge and experience, the city of Rotterdam, the Dutch research programme Knowledge for Climate and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment wish to invite you to the second international Delta conference in the Netherlands:
Deltas in Times of Climate Change II
Rotterdam, the Netherlands
24 - 26 September 2014
The conference will be held in Rotterdam, a city that has worked hard to make itself climate resilient, a city that searches permanently for innovative ways to turn threats of climate change into opportunities for the city.
Politicians, scientists, policy makers, practitioners, entrepreneurs -- all those wishing to know how deltas can adapt to climate change are invited to contribute. We expect internationally known scientists, senior government officials, mayors of big delta cities and CEO’s of big companies to present and share their views, innovations and practices in the field of adaptation to climate change.
The conference pursues three main goals:
Exchange of up-to-date top science on climate change and delta planning
Exploring and strengthening the links between science, policy and practice
Strengthening of international cooperation between deltas and delta cities
The accent of the conference is on planning and investment in times of climate change. Themes to be discussed are: flood risk management, salt intrusion and fresh water supply, adaptation in rural areas, climate proofing of cities, infrastructure and networks, climate projections, governance, decision support tools and cooperation.
The call for papers will be sent out in November 2013.
We hope to see you in Rotterdam in September 2014, so please mark the dates in your calendar.
