15th International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium (ISWSS)

The 15th International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium (ISWSS) will be held in Büsum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The date of March 23-26 2021 is postponed to 30 November - 03 December 2021. The event is  organised by National Park Authority Wadden Sea of Schleswig-Holstein, Ministry of Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature Conservation and Digitalization of Schleswig-Holstein, Common Wadden Sea Secretariat, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety

Importance of science for the management of the Wadden Sea World Heritage in the context of climate change

One of the current key challenges of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation is climate change, including sea level rise. The forthcoming ISWSS will focus on the urgent questions: How will the Wadden Sea ecosystem respond to climate change? What effects will it have on biodiversity, species composition and food webs? What effects will it have on the neighbouring Wadden Sea region? What management options are available? How can the Outstandig Universal Value (OUV) of the Wadden Sea be preserved? How will the touristic pressure on the World Heritage Site change? We also want to link to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UN Decade of the Ocean), which runs from 2021 to 2030 and represents a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for nations to work together to generate the global ocean science needed to support the sustainable development of our shared ocean.

Invited are scientists, conservation managers, policy-makers, non-governmental organizations and students working in the Wadden Sea. A call for abstracts will be open for everyone, who wants to participate actively in the symposium with their research.

Abstract submission

The deadline for abstract submission for the 15th International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium (ISWSS) is September 30, 2020. Contributions for both oral and poster presentations, as well as for the Science Slam about the future of the Wadden Sea are welcomed.

A publication of the contributions at the symposium (talk or poster) will be possible in a peer-reviewed paper under the topical collection „Biodiversity and Ecology of the Wadden Sea under changing environments“ in the journal “Marine Biodiversity” published by Springer.
