16th International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium

The Wadden Sea in Transition: Cumulative Pressures and Conservation

Save the date

The 16th International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium (ISWSS) will take place from Tuesday, 28 October, to Thursday, 30 October 2025, in Groningen. Building on the commitments of the 2023 Wilhelmshaven Declaration, this symposium will bring together around 200 scientists from Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands to jointly explore critical issues in the UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

The focus of the symposium will be on the cumulative impacts of both natural (e.g., tides, seasons) and human-induced (e.g., climate change, pollution, fisheries, energy, ports & shipping, coastal defence, tourism) forces on the site’s Outstanding Universal Value (OUV). Strengthening our understanding of these complex interactions is crucial for shaping effective policies, improving management efforts, and addressing future challenges.

The insights gained will contribute to the Trilateral Governmental Conference in early 2026 in Denmark.

More details on the programme, sessions, abstract submissions, and logistics will be shared in the coming months.
