Conference on European estuaries: large restoration measures needed for Ems

On February 22nd 2013 the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) organised the Conference “Restoration of European estuaries: Ideas, approaches and implementation” in Leer, Germany. During the conference great concern was expressed regarding the ecologically deteriorated state of the European estuaries including the Ems.

The research that was presented at the conference confirms the present turbid and sometimes anoxic state of the Ems. Only considerable financial and expansive measures such as the creation of tidal polders in combination with limitations on the deepening of the channel will improve the ecological quality of the estuary.
