International Fish Passage Conference to be held in the Netherlands in 2027
The Netherlands has been selected because of its strong reputation in water management and ecological restoration. “With the first Fish Migration River in the world, located in the Afsluitdijk, we demonstrate how the Netherlands is leading the way in integrated solutions for water and nature. Hosting this international conference here in Fryslân highlights the global relevance of our approach,” says regional executive Matthijs de Vries.
Fish Migration River as an international example
At the Afsluitdijk, the Fish Migration River will create an open connection between the Wadden Sea and Lake IJsselmeer, soon allowing migratory fish to move freely between the North Sea and the Rhine delta. This restored connection is essential for rebuilding fish populations, improving water quality, and supporting a rich ecosystem. Unique in the world, the project serves as a model for other deltas and coastal regions - and in 2027, the conference will coincide with its official opening.
International exchange in the Netherlands
The conference will bring together experts and organisations from across the globe to share knowledge and develop solutions for healthier ecosystems. It is being organised by the Province of Fryslân in partnership with national and international stakeholders, with work on the programme and wider organisation set to continue in the months ahead.
