Trilateral Workshop focussed on EU Nature Restoration Regulation

On 24 March 2026, representatives from Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands gathered in Hamburg for a workshop dedicated to discussing a joint approach of the Wadden Sea Region for enhancing coordination of implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR). The meeting, organized by the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat in collaboration with the Waddenacademie, brought together experts, policy makers, and practitioners to strengthen cross-border collaboration as EU Member States prepare their National Restoration Plans, in line with the NRR’s request for regional coordination of marine restoration efforts.

The workshop was organised with the aim of ensuring that the status of the Wadden Sea as a transboundary UNESCO World Heritage Site is fully reflected in national NRR planning and implementation. Presentations provided insights into the regulatory background of the NRR, followed by country-specific perspectives on early planning efforts. Group discussion centred around questions of common terminologies, monitoring gaps and priority measures for the Wadden Sea ecosystem, outlining opportunities for coordinated trilateral restoration actions.

The results of the workshop will be consolidated into a report and a proposal on how to move forward, serving as a basis for trilateral collaboration for the implementation of EU Nature Restoration Plans and further strengthening the Wadden Sea’s position as a flagship ecosystem within the European restoration agenda.
