Translation 'The Status of the Wadden Sea under European and International Law’ has been published

Earlier this year, the book 'The European and International Legal Status of the Wadden Sea' was published under the editorship of the Waddenacademie (Kees Bastmeijer et al; Boom Juridische Uitgevers 2024). The summary chapter of this book has now been translated into English to enter into discussions with the other two Wadden Sea countries about better implementation of the European directives and international treaties that aim to protect the Wadden Sea.

The book brought together knowledge about 13 international and European legal regimes that aim to protect the Wadden Sea. Because most of these legal regimes also apply to the German and Danish Wadden Sea parts, a trilateral workshop was organized by the Waddenacademie and the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat in November 2024. The translation of the final chapter of the book served as a basis. The aim of the workshop was to select the most important themes that relate to the proper implementation of the legal regimes. These themes will be the subject of more comprehensive discussions during a trilateral workshop in 2025. The discussions could lead to strengthened cooperation between the three countries. Depending on the outcomes, concrete actions may be included in the 2026 Ministerial Declaration of the three countries.

The translated final chapter, as well as an English translation of the reflection with policy recommendations, published by the Waddenacademie following the study, can be found in our publication list, or downloaded below.
